Saddle up, Hood River! The Hood River Saddle Club is celebrating 80 incredible years of fostering a love for horses, horsemanship, and community.
Since 1945, this club has been more than just a place to ride—it’s been a gathering spot for horse lovers of all ages, preserving open space, supporting youth programs, and creating lifelong friendships in the saddle.
“Reaching our 80th year is a milestone that reflects the dedication and passion of our members and supporters,” said Ruth Chausse and Lorna Paddock, Co-Presidents of the Hood River Saddle Club. “Our club’s legacy is built on shared values of community, education, and a profound respect for horses.”
More Than Just a Club—A Community Treasure
Since its charter in 1945, the club has grown into a vital part of Hood River’s identity. What began as three families pooling their resources to establish a safe and welcoming horseback riding facility has flourished into a nonprofit with an annual membership of about 100 dedicated riders and supporters. It maintains approximately 10 acres of open public space in the Westside. The club’s facilities have evolved over the years. An outdoor riding arena, measuring 145’x250’, serves as the centerpiece of the grounds. The clubhouse, complete with a meeting space, restrooms, a stone fireplace, and a full kitchen, has welcomed generations of riders and families. Decades ago, the club was home to thrilling rodeos that drew over 100 competitors and crowds of more than 2,000 spectators. Today, it remains a hub for equestrian events, horse shows, clinics and social group rides. The clubhouse is a popular private rental space for family celebrations, local organizations annual parties, as well as a meeting place for groups such as 4H and Backcountry Horseman.
